🌍 🎨The first Climate Biennale, which explored the links between climate care and art through innovative experimental approaches, concluded in Vienna in mid-July. The Biennale also saw the launch of the Biofabrique factory, dedicated to discovering new materials from urban waste.

🏭♻️ For 100 days, students from the Vienna University of Technology explored how urban waste materials could be reused in design, architecture, or industry. They studied plants from the Danube, beer dregs, and waste provided by the project’s industrial partners, including Vienna City Passenger Transport, Wiener Linien, the Austrian brick manufacturer Wienerberger AG, and the Ströck bakery, which contributed leftover bakery cakes.

🍻During the Biennale, the first products were presented, including a Vienna brick made from a mix of waste from the expansion of the public transport network and beer dregs. The students have developed more than 100 promising recipes, with 20 now being perfected. The materials will be tested for the first time in September during the festival centerpiece of Vienna Fashion Week. Biofabrique’s industrial partners are also planning to use the new materials in their plants.

🌱🚀“The use of the new materials is a test for the whole city. We are working with Biofabrique to accelerate Vienna’s path towards climate-neutral and regional production,” said Peter Hanke, Vienna’s Minister for Economic Affairs.
