🌱Every year, Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity has used up all the natural resources that the planet can regenerate in a year. In 2025, this day falls on 24 July. In other words, in less than seven months, we will have already used up our annual ‘ecological budget.’ For the rest of the year, we will be living on credit that the Earth cannot repay.
👥Through our Erasmus+ AgeinGreen project, we raise awareness among intergenerational groups about key environmental issues like Earth Overshoot Day, helping people of all ages understand how personal actions affect our planet’s limits.
⚠️ This overshoot has serious consequences: soil depletion, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, accumulation of CO₂ in the atmosphere, extreme weather events, etc. Pressure on ecosystems is intensifying, threatening our food security, our economies and our quality of life.
📊According to the latest calculations by the Global Footprint Network, we currently use 1.8 Earths to meet our needs. This overexploitation is only possible by drawing on the Earth’s natural capital, at the expense of future generations. This year, Earth Overshoot Day is eight days earlier than in 2024, mainly due to a downward reassessment of the oceans’ capacity to absorb carbon.
💡 However, it is possible to slow down or even reverse this trend of seeing this day arrive earlier and earlier in the year by staying informed, alerting those around you, and practising more sustainable and environmentally conscious habits daily!
♻️ So, we can try to consume less (only what is essential), recycle or repair as often as possible, choose environmentally friendly transport, and support the many local initiatives in our communities.
